I created the following chart detailing the 16 upcoming state legislative special elections taking place over the next few months:
From a partisan standpoint, the most significant of these elections will be:
- the two elections in the Connecticut State Senate (if that body remains deadlocked, the Democrat Lieutenant Governor can break ties)
- the tie-breaking contest in the Delaware State Senate (which has yet to be scheduled).
With all of the news coverage about the large number of participants in Saturday’s Womens’ Marches across the country, many are wondering whether such citizen activism will translate into voter engagement. In some districts, particularly in the Northeast, we will begin to learn the answer to that question very soon.
